Our Purple Preferring Professor, Mrs. Mendicino has challenged us to become expert investigators to solve a bird mystery.
She shared this picture taken in her backyard near Guelph. Our mission was to find out what bird this was!
We began our mission looking at the things we knew. This is a screen capture from our Smartboard page.
Our amazing detectives decided to search in books and online for pictures of birds of prey.
We made a list of possible birds it could be. Then we looked a little further at all of the features.
This helped us rule out some choices on our list. We had it narrowed down to 4 birds. Here's a
shot of our investigation.
Mrs. M came back for a visit with more information for us! She asked for some help from some bird experts who told her it was either a Cooper's Hawk or a Sharp-Shinned Hawk (which were two of our choices)! The experts can't even tell because this hawk's tail is hidden by the fence. We are so proud of our research skills and now we are ready to share our learning. Some students will use character vokis to explain, some will use voicethread, and others will use wallwisher or glogster! We hope you enjoy learning about these birds as much as we do!
Hello Gill-Ville. I was so impressed with your research and problem solving skills. You were able to discover the same correct choices as the bird experts. Well Done! Here is the website to help with bird identification. http://www.natureinstruct.org/dendroica/ Enjoy listening to the bird calls, even if they sound like laughter. I am so proud of you all. Mrs.M
WOW! Cool! Thanks Mr Donovan! We'll check that out in class. Come back in a few days to see all the sharing we will be doing!
Mrs M. Thanks so much for inspiring this awesome project! It was great to have you rejoin us today. I guess the next time we speak we'll be rolling in butter.....not sure if I'm ready to thank you for our next challenge! ;-)
